Understanding the art and science of mixing can be a daunting task. But one good way of doing so is to learn how to visualize mixing.
You can regard a mix as a three-dimensional plane where:
- The x-axis is the left to right balance
- The y-axis is the spectral frequency
- The Z-axis is the depth (or loudness/softness)
I have found at least two easy to understand videos that explain what they mean. These videos will not necessarily teach you techniques on how to actually come up with a great mix, but they will give you a better understanding of the reasoning behind some techniques employed during mixing.
This one is fairly short.
This one, on the other hand, is very long. It may as well be the closest thing that many of you will come to having an acid trip, but the presentation is surprisingly easy to understand. Watching as much of it as you can is guaranteed to be beneficial in helping you figure out what a good mix entails.
